Gabriel Zufferey (pianist)

abriel Zufferey is just like his music : unique. Profound and delicate, strong and calm, a fineness and infinite amplitude. When he touches the keys, we forget time and space. It is as though his trail is clear ; Gabriel Zufferey was to play and will play. Even the theory exhilarates him and in 8 years he completes the classic curriculum of normally 15 years.

He began composing early and prizes hailed ; « Best Newcomer » at the Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition, « Jury's Special Prize » at the Solo Piano Competition in the Montreux Jazz Festival. Does his soul influence his play or is it the opposite? Gabriel has no age, or all ages. « Thrilling maturity », said of him Arnaud Robert, from the journal Le Temps, when he was only 16.

At 19, he recorded his first album, Après l’orage, with Daniel Humair and Sébastien Boisseau. In 2010, Hear and Know is released, a live album with Ramon Lopez, Samuel Blaser and Patrice Moret. Two stays in New York will give him desires to go back to the roots, from which Contemplation will come up, his first solo album, highly praised by the New York City Jazz Record. Moreover, his recordings each get 4 stars in the Jazzmagazine-Jazzman.

As leader or as a guest, he will visit Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Croatia, Austria, Italy, France and soon China, inspired by the encounters and interactions that constantly extend his music. With a huge human and musical generosity, Gabriel remains honest. Refusing concessions, he will concentrate on the essential : sharing his music. Dave Liebman, Ari Hoenig, Daniel Yvinec, all agree to recognize the uniqueness of his music constantly filling us with wonder.

Today, Gabriel is 31 and preparing B.E. For Heavens, sublime homage to Bill Evans, with his dreamlike and heavenly touch. He pays tribute to him, with sincerity in the evocation of his world, and freedom through his own interpretation.

In the same time, and after two residences, Gabriel goes deeply into the language of the trio with his new band Paralog. Improvisation and thrill weave an impressive web on which landmarks and emancipation are finding their own construction. A music always at its full power, between the rousing harmonies of Gabriel, the flexible and audacious groove of drummer from Bern Domi Chansorn and the solid architecture built by bassist from Emmental Christoph Utzinger.

The Republic and canton of Geneva and the City of Geneva are supporting Gabriel Zufferey with the Bourse dans le domaine des musiques actuelles for the years 2015 and 2016, and particularly in his solo project and with the collective trio Paralog.
